چکیده
We present an analysis of the time behavior of the S&P500 (Standard and Poors) New York stock exchange index before and after the October 1987 market crash and identify precursory patterns as well as aftershock signatures and characteristic oscillations of relaxation. Combined, they all suggest a picture of a kind of dynamical critical point, with characteristic log-periodic signatures, similar to what has been found recently for earthquakes. These observations are connrmed on other smaller crashes, and strengthen the view of the stockmarket as an example of a self-organizing cooperative system.

Large financial crashes
We propose that large stock market crashes are analogous to critical points studied in statistical physics with log-periodic correction to scaling. We extend our previous renormalization group model of stock market prices prior to and after crashes [D. Sornette et al., J.Phys.I France 6, 167, 1996] by including the first non-linear correction. This predicts the existence of a log-frequency shif...
متن کاملSpeculative Bubbles and Crashes in Stock Markets: An Interacting-Agent Model of Speculative Activity
In this paper we present an interacting-agent model of speculative activity explaining bubbles and crashes in stock markets. We describe stock markets through an infinite-range Ising model to formulate the tendency of traders getting influenced by the investment attitude of other traders. Bubbles and crashes are understood and described qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of the classical...
متن کاملStock market crashes as social phase transitions
Stock market crashes are traumatic events that affect the lives of millions of people around the globe and have tremendous economic implications. Crashes are not only dramatic, but often completely unexpected. The 1987 crash, for example, was not induced by any obvious trigger. Even after the fact, it is hard to find the reason for the crash – Why did the market crash in October rather than in ...

The authors argue that the word “critical” in the title is not purely literary. Based on their and other previous work on nonlinear complex dynamical systems, they summarize present evidence, on the Oct. 1929, Oct. 1987, Oct. 1987 Hong-Kong, Aug. 1998 global market events and on the 1985 Forex event, for the hypothesis advanced three years ago that stock market crashes are caused by the slow bu...
متن کاملMarket Crashes , Correlated Illiquidity , and “ Flight to Quality ” ∗
Models with i.i.d. returns and perfect liquidity (e.g., Merton (1971)) suggest that after a stock price crash, investors should buy more stock. However, many investors sell stock to buy safe assets after a market crash (a “flight-to-quality”), even when market liquidity has significantly worsened. In this paper, we propose a tractable and flexible portfolio selection model where market crashes ...
متن کاملRational panics and stock market crashes
This paper offers an explanation for stock market crashes which focuses on the role of rational but uninformed traders. We show that uninformed traders can precipitate a price crash because as prices decline, they surmise that informed traders received negative information, which leads them to reduce their demand for assets and drive the price of stocks even lower. The model yields several impl...
